Visiting Beijing Olympics: Tips for an enjoyable visit to 2008 Olympic games

Come August 2008 and all eyes will be on Beijing, the venue for the XXIX Summer Olympic Games. This mega event starts on August 8, 2008 (the 8th day of the 8th month of the 8th year of the century—the Chinese consider 8 an auspicious number!) and will go on till August 24, 2008.

The people of Beijing, the local government and the national government are leaving no stones unturned to make the Beijing Olympics one of the most memorable games ever. Preparations have been underway ever since the Chinese capital was awarded the bid to host the homes; billions of dollars have been spent and countless man-hours spent to ensure the city is ready to give participants, visitors and the global audience a glorious spectacle.

Travel and hotel bookings during the Olympics

Hotel accommodation and flight bookings are obviously things you must cater to very well in advance if you plan to visit the Beijing Olympics. With an expected inflow of millions of visitors to the city for the Games, getting confirmed air tickets and a good hotel to stay will undoubtedly be a challenge. Closer to the event, flight tickets and hotel room rates are expected to hit astronomical levels, so the earlier the bookings can be done, the better it will be.

Getting to the venue of the Games should not be an issue with the efficient public transport systems. Most of the hotels have also made arrangements to transport guests to important events.

About the Games

Beijing Olympics Stadium

The opening and closing ceremony of the event is to be held at the newly-built National Stadium in Beijing, an architectural marvel, which is now coming to be known as The Bird's Nest for its eye-catching shape. Built-specifically for the Olympics as the major venue for athletic events as well as the finals of the soccer event, the stadium can accommodate up to 80000 people in all.

Most of the events will be held in the beautiful city of Beijing itself. However, some events will be held in other cities. For instance, football will be held at Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenyang and also Qinhuangdao. The sailing events are to be held at Qingdao and equestrian in Hong Kong. There are in all 28 different sports categories and 302 events for the participants.

There are 31 different venues in Beijing that have undergone elaborate preparation to cater to the demands of the grand event. Some of the other important venues where various events would be held include the Beijing National Aquatics Centre, Beijing National Indoor stadium, the Beijing Wukesong Culture and Sports Center and the Olympic Green Convention centre.
