At the World Travel Awards- 2008, "Asia and Indian Ocean", held in Shanghai on June 19, 2008, India received an award for the leading travel destination in Asia.

Incepted in 1993, the World Travel Awards is considered the Oscars of the travel and tourism industry and the pinnacle of achievement for a travel product. The award is based on voting by travel professionals from over 167,000 travel agencies, tour and transport companies and tourism organizations in over 160 countries across the globe. Voting is carried out in 919 different categories.

In recent times, India has been marketed aggressively as a top tourist destination with this nation of over a billion people and countless sights and attractions being branded "Incredible India".
